Islamic Approaches to Mental Wellness: Managing Anxiety & Stress
This workshop is tailored for individuals dealing with anxiety, worry, and stress, offering practical tools and guidance based on the companion book, The Islamic Workbook for Managing Anxiety. Through the workshop, you’ll learn how to take control of your anxiety instead of letting it dominate your life. A variety of exercises will be shared to help you manage anxiety and stress effectively.
The workshop is built upon the principles of Traditional Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy (TIIP) (Khan et al., 2023), which integrates Islamic teachings with modern behavioural sciences. This therapeutic approach focuses on five key aspects of the human psyche:
Aql (thoughts),
Ihsas (emotions),
Nafs (behaviours),
Ruh (spirit), and
Qalb (spiritual heart)
Following the structure of the book, the workshop begins by exploring the nature of anxiety and its symptoms, then moves on to restructuring negative thoughts (aql), addressing avoidance behaviours (nafs), regulating emotions (ihsas), and nurturing the soul (ruh). The ultimate goal is to restore balance across these five dimensions, helping you move forward in life with greater emotional and spiritual well-being.
