Biography
Sumaya Karimi is a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Toronto and completed her clinical practicum at Women’s College Hospital. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and Psychology from York University. Trained in Traditional Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy (TIIP), she is equipped with integrating evidence-based therapeutic models within an Islamic framework.
Sumaya’s experiences include working with diverse and vulnerable communities, including children, youth, women and families experiencing mental health challenges and facing multiple barriers such as displacement, trauma, homelessness and addiction. Sumaya’s passion for mental health issues stems from her hyphenated identity and lived experiences as a Muslim and Afghan woman, as such, social justice, inclusion, and equity are at the core of her practice. She views therapy as a journey to self-empowerment, growth, and reclaiming one’s agency and power. She is committed to providing therapy from a client-centred, strength-based, trauma-informed and intersectional approach.
