CHANGING OUR CONDITION: AN AGENDA FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SPIRITUAL REFORM
One of the central missions of the Prophet (صل الله عليه و سلم) was to develop and reform human character in his saying, “I was only sent to perfect human character. Islamic Scholars of the past have written extensively on the refinement of human character and it encompasses a genre of literature known as tadheeb al-akhlaq. Awareness and access to this tradition has declined over time and its absence is a source of many psychological, relational and social ills of society. Modern psychology has investigated psychological and character traits that are associated with optimal human functioning that corroborate many of this lost largely unknown Islamic legacy. This conference attempts to illustrate these Islamic traditional concepts, modalities of changing human behavior in light of modern research in mainstream and positive psychology. This daylong conference consists of a series of workshops on select topics designed to enhance and reform human character. Topics include psycho-spiritual equilibrium, self-awareness, patience, gratitude, optimism, selflessness, addressing character defects, spiritual struggle, self-management and social skills.
